HOPE IN THE HILLS: BOSS MAGAZINE PH BRINGS JOY TO AETA CHILDREN
In the rolling hills of Sitio Pukis, Brgy. Papaac, Capas Tarlac, an hour travel from Camiling town proper, the air was alive with laughter and anticipation. Aeta children, barefoot but beaming with joy, gathered beneath the shade of towering trees. Their sun-kissed faces and wide-eyed wonder told a story of resilience in the face of life’s challenges. This day, however, was different. It was a day of abundance and hope, courtesy of Boss Magazine PH.
The feeding program and gift-giving initiative, spearheaded by Boss Magazine PH, was not just an act of charity—it was a testament to the power of community and shared humanity. Over the years, the Aeta community, an indigenous group known for their deep connection to the land, has faced numerous challenges, from marginalization to limited access to resources. This event was designed to remind them that they are not forgotten.
A Heartfelt Mission
“We wanted to do something that wasn’t just about giving, but about connecting,” said Remie Degoma, Publisher/Editor-in-Chief of Boss Magazine PH. "It’s about letting them know that their stories, their smiles, and their dreams matter.”
The team arrived early in the morning, their van loaded with packs of rice, canned goods, fresh produce, and an array of gifts. Volunteers, some of whom brought their friends to join the effort, worked hand-in-hand to set up the event. Large pots of steaming “Lugaw and trays of snacks filled the air with a comforting aroma, a prelude to the feast they had prepared.
“It’s more than food or presents—it’s about dignity and making memories,” Remie added. She spoke about how the project had been months in the making, with donations pouring in from readers, partners, and friends of the magazine.
Voices from the Hills
As the children lined up, their tiny hands clutching plates, there was a buzz of excitement. Some of them spoke shyly to the volunteers, expressing their thanks in a mix of Filipino and their native language.
A 10-year-old named Kaloy, his shirt patched but neatly tucked, couldn’t contain his excitement. “I’ve never tasted something like this before,” he said, savoring his first spoonful of spaghetti. His younger sister, Lia, clung to him, holding tightly to a brightly wrapped gift she had just received.
When asked what she hoped was inside, Lia whispered, “A doll, maybe. But even if it’s not, I’m happy.” Her simple wish encapsulated the quiet dignity of the community—a reminder that joy doesn’t always come from grand things, but from being remembered.
A Celebration of Generosity
The highlight of the day came when the gifts were distributed. From toys and clothes to school supplies, the brightly wrapped presents brought squeals of delight. One child, Carlos, found a brand-new pair of slippers in his package. He immediately slipped them on, grinning from ear to ear. “I won’t have to walk barefoot anymore,” he said, his voice full of pride.
The parents, too, couldn’t hide their gratitude. “These moments bring so much light to our children,” shared Rosa, a mother of five. “It’s not just about the gifts—it’s about feeling seen and valued.”
More Than a Day
As the sun dipped below the horizon, the volunteers and Aeta families shared a final meal together, stories and laughter flowing freely. Boss Magazine PH’s team vowed to make this a yearly tradition, emphasizing that such efforts are not a one-time act, but part of a larger commitment to uplifting marginalized communities.
“The joy in their faces—that’s what stays with you,” said Remie as she packed up for the day. “It’s a reminder of what really matters: kindness, connection, and the willingness to show up for one another.”
For the Aeta children, the day ended with bellies full, hearts light, and dreams a little brighter. And for the volunteers of Boss Magazine PH, it was a powerful reminder that even in the smallest acts of giving, there lies the power to change lives. // www.bossmagazineph.com
